Why I do what I do

In my younger years I never felt like I fit in. I distinctly remember feeling as if I was on the outside looking in as everyone around me seemed to be navigating life with ease. This turned into a sense of not feeling ‘good enough’ and my self-esteem plummeted. My mental health suffered as a result and I developed an eating disorder and began self-harming. This proceeded to steal away any shred of confidence or self-esteem I had until I was a hollow shell.

One day, I woke up and began the usual war with my mind and then stopped myself in my tracks. I was tired of this war. I was tired of hating myself and not doing the things I knew I was capable of.

Something had to change.

I started being more open with my therapist and made some serious mindset shifts. Through therapy and a whole heap of self-development work over the years I’ve managed to rediscover my worth, believe in myself and feel confident again. I know my place in the world now. I’ve found my voice, unearthed my passions and created a life around them.

It hasn’t always been easy and, like everyone, I still come up against struggles from time to time. My life is far from perfect and I’m very much still on my own journey - but the work I’ve done has given me a solid foundation of self-worth to fall back on. This foundation helps me feel safe and like, no matter what happens, I’ll be OK.

Throughout all of this I’ve been blogging and sharing my journey. From 2008 to 2016 I updated my blog like a journal, but in 2017 I decided to start from scratch. I created a new blog called Blue Jay of Happiness and used it to share actionable and supportive content on all things health, happiness and hope.

After a while I realised I wanted to do more. I wanted to take the advice off the page and help people apply it in their life, with their specific set of circumstances. So I decided to train as a coach and see where this would take me. This brings us up to date and where I am now, on a mission to support others with self-worth, self-belief and confidence.

My beliefs:

- We all have the ability to change and can develop self-belief and confidence.

- In order to grow as a person we must also grow as a society.

- You don’t have to completely uphaul your life to make positive changes.

- Our past experiences don’t define us.

- Compassion for ourselves breeds happiness and fulfilment.

Whether it’s through writing, podcasting or coaching, I want more of us to value ourselves, as we are, in this very moment.

Outside of my coaching and content creation work here at Blue Jay, I write about self-care, mental health and personal development for Memiah and Happiful magazine. Researching and writing about these subjects for nearly a decade has fuelled my passion and helped me get to where I am today.

Outside of Blue Jay of Happiness

Outside of my coaching and content creation work here at Blue Jay, I write about self-care, mental health and personal development for Memiah and Happiful magazine. Researching and writing about these subjects for nearly a decade has fuelled my passion and helped me get to where I am.

While my work is a great passion of mine, I’m also mindful that it’s not all I am. When I’m not working, I tend to be… well, relaxing! I love practising yoga at home, sinking into baths, reading and watching films. After recovering from my eating disorder I found a love for food and enjoy nothing more than eating out with friends or indulging at home. My parents’ cat Sanka makes me smile every time I see him and I can’t wait until my partner and I can get a pet of our own.

Taking pictures in an ongoing creative outlet for me and I probably spend more time than I should on Instagram. In my past life I wrote about music and fashion, and while I no longer write about these subjects, they still add colour to my everyday.

Random facts about me:

- I have seven tattoos and counting

- I’m an INFJ Advocate

- I live with my partner Dan in Surrey, UK

- My favourite film is ‘Into the Wild’

- My weirdest job was making candles in a factory

If you want to get to know me better there are lots of ways to do that. You could follow me on Instagram, read the blog, give my podcast a listen or subscribe to my newsletter. Either way, I’d love to get to know you better, so don’t hesitate to say hi.

“Kat listened and I truly felt that she could understand my challenges. Most importantly she has this gift of making you feel comfortable, even as you share some vulnerable things about yourself!”
